A Digitally Constructed Landscape. What if beneath the street there’s an invisible, mysterious landscape, quietly suggested by the access covers we pass each day without noticing?

Stop for a moment, and look. They hint at the city’s recent history – 1930, 1950, 1987, 1990, 2013, 2020. Wow, some of them were born before we were.

If we pay attention, they also remind us of the unseen arteries without which our cities would cease to function – essentials like water, gas, telephone, sewage. Were we to visit down there in the darkness, we’d discover a dangerous but vital world.

And here’s a crazy thought. What if they’re also a metaphor?

What if there’s a parallel world beneath our conscious awareness, beneath our obvious beliefs and aspirations? What if certain arteries of our minds animate us without our noticing? What if we’re guided by different forces than our conscious minds suggest?

And what if we became aware of our own access covers? Would they enable us to visit dark but essential forces that exist in the underworld, below our conscious minds?
