New exhibit at Arts Etobicoke Gallery

I received word yesterday that one of my images has been selected for an exhibition titled Territories, at the Arts Etobicoke Gallery.

My piece is called The Parliament of Birds, and it’s part of a series of fantastical images I’m busy creating this year.

I’m pretty excited because this is the first public viewing of art from this new series.

The Parliament of Birds

The Opening reception is next Thursday, October 9, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. It’s at Cloverdale Common at Cloverdale Mall (250 The East Mall, Toronto, M9B 3Y8). Hope you can come.

The exhibit will run till November 15. Check times and location at https://www.artsetobicoke.com/gallery/.

You may remember a blog I wrote about The Parliament of Birds in June.

It features a fantasy legislature hanging from a crane, hovering over the countryside and populated by a flock of avian legislators.

It’s fair to say that some of these law-makers are overly self-assured. Some think they’re pretty big, and some are infantile. Some are way too comfortable, serenely perched on their nests.

Some appear to be competing to be the king of the castle. And others are simply fowl, big-mouthed and arrogant. But maybe we should forgive them for all that, because they are roosting at the very centre of supreme power.

However, just to remind us what can happen to human beings when we get over-confident and fly too close to the sun, you can also catch a glimpse of Icarus on this canvas. He’s the mythological high-flier whose wax wings melted, sending him plunging to earth.

And I guess that’s me in the red jacket, barely hanging on, as your humble interpreter of all things parliamentary. At this distance, you may not see that my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek.

I think the other images in the Territories event also look pretty interesting. The gallery says it “explores the deep connection between people and the spaces they inhabit, examining how environments shape identity, culture, and social interactions. Cities hold stories of migration, belonging, and adaptation, while also influencing how we live, connect, and see ourselves within a larger community.”

 See you there?
